Last year, South Africa made international headlines after negotiating a drastic cut in the price of a relatively new once-weekly, three-month course to prevent TB. Now, we're just months ahead of an anticipated national rollout of the drug combo, also known as 3HP.
But older medication to prevent TB in South Africa is nothing new. Past rollouts were foiled by poor uptake among healthcare workers and patients alike.
Could 3HP finally usher in a new era in TB prevention? The Aurum Institute and the Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism team up ahead of World TB Day to unpack this and more.
The panel will be moderated by Mia Malan, editor-in-chief of Bhekisisa.
Panellists include:
Yogan Pillay, deputy director-general, South African National Department of Health
Regina Osih, senior technical expert in TB and HIV, The Aurum Institute
Windy Mogosi, TB community healthcare worker
Gary Maartens, head, Clinical Pharmacology UCT and chief specialist physician, Groote Schuur Hospital
Thibault Crosnier Leconte, GM and country chair, Sanofi South Africa, Namibia and Botswana
